Events

Medals usually commemorated important events in the history of a nation or a state, anniversaries of political events such as e.g. the Union of Lublin, the US Constitution, 3 May Constitution, establishment of the Duchy of Warsaw or the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland. Other medals recalled military victories that played a vital role in reviving national patriotism, such as medals referring to the Battle of Vienna and the victory of King John III Sobieski, Battle of Racławice and Tadeusz Kościuszko, as well as medals celebrating the activities of important institutions, such as e.g. the National Museum in Warsaw. This collection may seem a bit incoherent, for it consists in most part of rather accidental donations. However, it does boast some very interesting and at times baffling items.
